"If we were judged by the things we most regret, no human being would be worthy to sweep the floor." - Scythe Constantine, Thunderhead
Scythe Constantine is a scythe, and head of the Scythedom's bureau of investigations.
Biography[]
Thunderhead[]
Scythe Constantine was hunting Rowan before the threat on Scythe Anastasia and Scythe Curie lives. With their help (and Greyson) they were able to capture the unsavories. Scythe Constantine even sacrificed his eyes for Anastasia, (which she never thanked him for).
At Winter Conclave he nominated Scythe Curie for High Blade. At the end of the conclave he was invited to dinner with the rest of Scythe Curie supporters (and Morrison). He informs them that Scythe Brahms and Scythe Rand hired the unsavories and they should keep their guard up.
Anastasiaās Shadow[]
After Endura sank he became High Blade Goddardās Third Underscythe, secretly keeping the Texas Scythedom from joining Goddard. Scythe Constantine oversaw Benās apprenticeship in Texas.
The Toll[]
Scythe Constantine changed his robe to the bejewled style of the New Order following Goddard's rise to overblade, and became one of his underscythes. He planted the thought to Scythe Rand, that sheās Goddard voice of reason, telling her to try and slow down his rate of change to allow them to see the unforeseen and foreseen consequences of Goddardās actions.
Scythe Constantine talks to Rowan before his execution. During Goddard speech he informed him that Rowan was replaced with the engineer, giving the engineer a merciful death.
Before Goddard went to the Atoll, Scythe Constantine joined the Texas Scythedom and admitted to Rowan that he believes Goddardās clutches on the world must be weakened at all costs.
Physical description[]
Scythe Constantine face is soft, almost feminine, as a result of having set his age back so many times that his basic bone structure had lost its definition. He is also said to be quite tall, but not as tall as Scythe Curie.
Personality[]
Constantine wasn't the type of person to put someone at ease. He likes when being acknowledged for his work.
Constantine professed no sides, that only applied when the sides were evenly matched. He abhorred a gross imbalance of power. True, it was in his best interests to serve the winning side, but he felt it wise to make accommodations for the wounded side, should the tide ever change.
He also hated losing control. When Ben made Constantine unexpectedly laugh, he was embarrased.
However, he does care about others, especially Ben. When Ben smiled in reaction, he found the entire thing as rewarding as it was annoying. He is suspected by Ben to follow through his threat on the masseurs. Ben describes him as a monster the last time they saw each other, but Constantine does not dispute it, suggesting at least he doesn't completely disagree.
Appearances[]
Trivia[]
- Despite having a blood-red robe, he is not the scythe on the cover of the first book.
- Scythe Constantine hated his silk robe, because it was eye-catching when reflecting light, and not durable. He didnāt change it, citing his belief that, "a scythe who changes their robe broadcasts weakness and indecisiveness."
- However, he did change the fabric material when he joined the Texas Scythedom. [1]
