"Narcissus incarnate, that man." — Scythe Faraday on Scythe Alighieri, The Toll
Scythe Alighieri is a retired scythe born in the mortal age, making him the oldest scythe alive.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Born in the Brittannia region, but having also formerly been part of EuroScandia, FrancoIberia, TransSiberia, and Byzantium, was a very old Scythe, having been born in the mortal age, and even witnessed the founding scythes ride through town on their way to Buckingham Palace.
Alighieri was originally part of the Florentine Scythedom where he was ordained as a scythe but was banished to the Bavarian Scythedom. There he took residence in the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany where he founded the unofficial Neuschwanstein Scythedom of which he was the High Blade.
After the mortal purges where over he was banished from the Bavarian Scythedom.[1]
He was infamously part of the NewHope gleaning, lead by Scythe Goddard. He kept himself far from the outside world with his age and was known to glean anyone that bothered him (even with the annoyance of granting immunity to the family members) and had no knowledge of many outside matters such as the sinking of Endura.
The Toll[]
During the Year of the Cobra, Alighieri is visited by Citra, Greyson, and Jeri. Citra tries to convince Alighieri to make a broadcast to the world about the NewHope gleaning, hoping that Alighieri will do it so that she can incriminate Overblade Goddard. Ultimately, Alighieri is convinced to make the broadcast, revealing to the world the truth of the NewHope gleaning, and exposing Goddard as the mastermind behind the gleaning.
Personality[]
Alighieri has been described as narcissistic, misogynistic, and solipsistic. He believes that only self-interest is worthwhile. For him, self-love was the greatest love of all. However, he could not love himself enough, so he needed others to love him too. He couldn't tolerate anyone in his vicinity being more beautiful than him, so he would try to make them seem less attractive.[1]
Physical description[]
Alighieri is said to be good-looking, with long, thick auburn hair.[1]
